The 70-year-old Chinese man who hand-carved over 6,000 stairs up a mountain for his 80-year-old wife has passed away in the cave which has been the couple's home for the last 50 years.

Over 50  years ago,
Liu Guojiang a 19 year-old boy, fell in love with a 29 year-old widowed  mother named Xu Chaoqin..

In a twist worthy of Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet, friends and relatives criticized the relationship because of the age difference and the fact that Xu already had children.

At that time, it was unacceptable and immoral for a young man  to love an older woman.. To avoid the market gossip and the scorn of their communities, the couple decided to  elope and lived in a cave in Jiangjin County in Southern ChongQing Municipality.

In the beginning, life was harsh as hey had nothing, no electricity or even food.  They had to eat grass and roots they found in the mountain, and Liu made a  kerosene lamp that they used to light up their lives.

Xu felt that she had tied Liu down and repeatedly asked him, 'Are you regretful? Liu always replied, 'As long as we are industrious, life will improve.'

In the second year  of living in the mountain, Liu began and continued for over 50 years, to  hand-carve the steps so that his wife could get down the mountain  easily.

Half a century later in 2001, a group of adventurers were  exploring the forest and were surprised to find the elderly couple and the  over 6,000 hand-carved steps.

Liu MingSheng,  one of their seven children said, 'My parents loved each other so much, they  have lived in seclusion for over 50 years and never been apart a single day.  He hand carved more than 6,000 steps over the years for my mother's  convenience, although she doesn't go down the mountain that  much.'

The couple had  lived in peace for over 50 years until last week. Liu, now 72 years, returned  from his daily farm work and collapsed. Xu sat and prayed with her husband as  he passed away in her arms. So in love with Xu, was Liu, that no one was able  to release the grip he had on his wife's hand even after he had passed away.

'You promised me you'll take care of me, you'll always be with me until the day I died, now you left before me, how am I going to live without you?'

Xu spent days softly repeating this sentence and touching her husband's black coffin with tears rolling down her cheeks.

In 2006, their story became one of the top 10 love stories from China , collected by the Chinese Women Weekly. The local government has decided to  preserve the love ladder and the place they lived as a museum, so this love  story can live forever.

for everyone

Pesawat take off tepat waktunya, sampai di Dallas sudah jam 12 p.m. Kami percaya sama omonganya counter.  Di airport disediakan veltbed bisa tidur.  Besok pagi2 Jam 3 a.m. kami berangkat dari Dallas sampai Austin jam 4 a.m. Achirnya kurang 1 hari berangkat, kopor kami baru datang sorenya, sedangkan paginya mau berangkat.

Dilanjutkan ke - Reunion-3 dengan cruise-2

Blog EntryThe River of Kwai missing linkFeb 2, '08 12:04 AM
for everyone

Amazing!!!!!  Inget film the bridge of River Kuai bikinan U.S.  Ceritera dr. Wassel menolong penderita korban perang Jepang di Jawa Tengah.  Beliau melarikan dan mengungsikan penderita lewat Cilacap.

Sudah beberapa tahun seorang dr. Belanda namanya dr.

Dear Dr. Arif Haliman,  On September 23 2005 I visited your hospital because I was born there in 1938. You received my husband and me so very cordially.  You showed us your hospital and pointed out the old, but restored parts and the, at that time almost finished few addition.  On top of it all you showed me the register of my birth year in which it said that Dr. van der Meulen delivered me on 10-9-38.  His son was and still is your friend, you told me.

This is the reason I am forwarding you this e-mail.  Dear friends of mine offered to look for his grave or marker while in Thailand.  And they were very lucky to find the marker, as you will read in their letter.

I would also like to forward this letter to Dr. van der Meulen's son in the US.  Would you be able to send it to me?

I wish you well, Dr.Haliman,

             =nbsp;           =nbsp; Respectfully,  Marijke Phlippeau-van =uchem

Subject: Marijke - we found Dr Willem van der Meulen's gravestone

Dear Marijke & Evert,

We are having a wonderful visit to
Thailand with dear friends.  Dr. Wiwat Suasa-ard & family,Director, Kasetsart Univ's National Biocontrol Lab outside Bangkok, took us to set out some =raps for Paul to catch more moths which proved fruitful, and then to see sights in the area up towards the River Kwai  & Myanmar border.

We just had an incredible visit today in Thailand to the
Hellfire Pass Memorial Museum & to the Thailand-Burma Railway Centre in Kanchanaburi & to the cemetary near the River Kwai, where 200,000 died during the WWII.  90,000 died from this region of Thailand, Burma, Malaysia et al and 110,000 from western countries like UK,AU Holland, and USA.  We have come to learn that all the US losses have since been repatriated to national cemeteries in the US.

Marijke, thanks for having us check on the Doctor who delivered you into this world in
Indonesia.  At first, the staff searched the computerized data for "Dr. van der Meulen" and we found there were 8 different van der Meulens who were (1) both in the military and (2) who actually died in the Thai-Burma Railway.  Also, there was no suggestion of a medical doctor status.  We thought there was no match without having a first name or date of birth.  Then Paul was directed to see the research director at the Centre, Derek Lawson, and we settled on the oldest and apparently highest ranking officer.  We were lucky in that this individual was in the very cemetary right across the street from the little museum in Kanchanburi.

We went to the actual gravesite and eureeka, there was "DR W. van der MEULEN'".   The rest of the gravemarker states "Off. U. Gez. 2 = KL. M.G. D.  (last row)  24.4.1899  =.7.1943".   From the computer records his given name was =Willem".  We have taken some pictures of the gravesite just for you.

Additionally, the computer records, state that his Rank was Officier van Gezondheid, de Klaase;  his Unit was Militaire Geneeskundige Dienst, K.N.I.L.;  Work area (as POW) Railway;  again Date of Death =/7/1943;  Place of Death was Kinsaiyok Main Camp;  First buried at
Kinsaiyok Dutch Cemetery, Grave No. V;  Cause of Death was Cholera;  Age:  44 years;  Next of Kin was waren;   Cemetery(Now):  Kanchanaburi;  Grave No. =.D.12 and it is here we have pictured.

It was amazing to be there camp; to see how many who were honored there!!!!  Nearby, we stopped at the now famious Bridge over the River Kwai but which was not in fact part of history but 90 created by Hollywood.  In the film, the many horrors were not depicted that had happened in real life. We will remember being where & honoring them for the hardships they went through.

With much love,  Jane & Paul
